How to transfer FIL from a 0x address to an f1 Address & How to make a burner wallet at GLIF

Many wallets that support 0x address only, like MetaMask, do not natively support f1 addresses, which are used by Ledger and many exchanges. To send FIL from a 0x address to an f1 address, you will need to use the GLIF website's burner wallet, which facilitates the necessary conversions. This guide will walk you through the process of creating a burner wallet on GLIF and using it as an intermediary to transfer FIL from your 0x address to the desired f1 address.

This tutorial uses MetaMask wallet as an example, as it works better with FEVM; other wallets may also work, but some issues might occur. You can refer to our FAQ if you encounter any trouble or please contact GLIF through a Discord support ticket.

Step 1: Set Up Your Burner Wallet on GLIF

  1. Visit the GLIF website and click "Connect Wallet" in the top right corner.

  1. Select "Burner Wallet" from the options.

  1. Choose "Filecoin (f1...)" as the address type. Click "Create Seed Phrase" to generate a new 24-word seed phrase.

  1. Click "Copy" and save the seed phrase in a safe place, as it will be used to regain access to the burner wallet if you get disconnected. Then, click "I've recorded my seed phrase."

  1. Then, you are required to type in several words from your seed phrase to double-check your record of the seed phrase. Finally, click "Connect."

  1. After connecting, you will see your burner wallet's f1 and 0x addresses.

  1. Copy the burner wallet's f1 address for later use.

It is highly recommended to disconnect and reconnect your newly created burner wallet before transferring any FIL to ensure you understand how to access it in the future, minimizing the risk of losing access to your funds.

Step 2: Send FIL from 0x address (MetaMask) to f1 address (Burner Wallet)

Remember to use the "Send FIL" page within GLIF when you attempt to send from a 0x address to an f1 address. Do not use the MetaMask browser extension wallet to send FIL in this step. Otherwise, your MetaMask may be connected to the Ethereum mainnet instead of the Filecoin mainnet.

  1. Visit the GLIF website and click "Connect Wallet." Select "MetaMask" from the options.

  1. Connect your MetaMask wallet to the Filecoin mainnet.

  1. If you see this page, it means your MetaMask wallet are connected.

  1. In the top right corner of GLIF website, click "Send / Forward FIL" .

  1. Paste your burner wallet's f1 address in the recipient field.

  2. Enter the amount of FIL you wish to transfer (start with a small test amount).

Before your send any FIL to the burner wallet, test it with a small amount of FIL.

  1. Click "Confirm" in MetaMask, ensuring you have sufficient FIL for gas fees.

  1. In the bottom right corner of the webpage, a notification box will appear, indicating "Transaction Pending" and providing you with a tx hash. When the transaction is completed, it will change to "Transaction Completed".

The GLIF team cannot help you find your tx hash. Please record your tx hash for tracking your transaction.

  1. You can check the transaction details on filfox.info by searching the tx hash.

  1. To confirm that the FIL you transferred went to your burner address, click "internal transfer" on the filfox.info transaction details page to view the address details. The "To" address should match your burner wallet's f1 address.

  1. Once the transaction is completed, disconnect MetaMask. Then, click "Connect Wallet" and connect your burner wallet by importing the seed phrase you saved earlier. Choose "Filecoin (f1...)" as the address type.

  1. Check your f1 burner wallet balance on the GLIF "wallet" page, or verify it by searching your burner wallet's f1 address on filfox.info.

Step 3: Transfer FIL from Burner Wallet to your f1 address (final destination)

  1. Stay connected to your burner wallet. On the GLIF website, click "Send FIL."

  1. Paste your final f1 destination address in the recipient field.

  2. Enter the desired amount of FIL to transfer.

  3. Click "Send" and confirm the transaction.

  1. After the transaction completed, you can check the transaction hash in the bottom right corner of the GLIF page.

  1. Once the transaction is completed, you can verify the balance of your final f1 address on filfox.info or by pasting your address after https://www.glif.io/en/address/(your f1 address).

  1. Congrats! Your FIL has been successfully transferred from a 0x address to your f1 address!

Conclusion

By following this step-by-step guide, you can successfully transfer FIL from your 0x address to an f1 address using GLIF's burner wallet as an intermediary. Remember to always double-check addresses and transaction details to ensure the accuracy and security of your funds.
